Hi guys,I have been placed on a project that was originally labelled as being a SQL Reporting role. However, it turns out that it's a bit more involved. My SQL skills are maybe slightly above average, my reporting skills are average (As I have only ever reported off a normal database...). My OLAP is non-existant, and my SSIS is at the point where I can get data from a flat file, use lookups, maybe uppercase or capitalise a few fields, and write to a SQL Server table. So, pretty basic. Now, the role involves providing a SQL Server Reporting solution for a large governmental agency (Loads of data!). They currently use a 'Progress' (??) database, but the role expects me to define a path to impliment SQL Reporting. What they are looking at is SSIS'ing the data from 'Progress' to SQL Server, and the word 'Data Mart' was mentioned a few times. SSRS would then report off that database.Does this sound straight forward? I am a C# developer (2 years), before that, Delphi Developer (8 years) all based on SQL Server. (That's just to explain my background). I get the feeling there is going to be OLAP involved, and that funny SQL .. can't remember the letters, but it uses 'Cubes and Dimenstions' and stuff. I'm looking for advice... maybe someone can say, "yeah, that will work fine.. Here's an example", or "Read this - it's an amazing introduction to Data Marts, based on the AdventureWorkds database". Something like that.I hope someone can assist, as my stress levels are pretty high now. I start tomorrow, but believe there's a week or so of analasys. |
