Hi all,

Bit of a general question this and I apologise in advance if this is the wrong place.

Was having a discussion with some colleaguesand we were talking about how we go about analysing an existing database. Terms of Keys, what the views are doing etc.

So here's the scenario. You have just arrived on a client site and they want you to cube up thier OLAP db.

How do you start the process ?

My thinking is to step back from the db and start asking questions around the sort of reports they want to see.

Then I work backwards from them and see what Tables/Views I need and the measures I may need to incorporate. It's a bit of a zen thing but I start to do a few selects on what look like key tables and build up a picture of what is going on.

Any tools you use to produce the ERD's apart from SSMS itself ?

Sorry if this is the wrong place.

Thanks.
