Greetings! WARNING!!! rant detected Found out last week that 30 to 40 of us are getting the axe, apparently it's better for the company to get some more Indian programmers to take over rules. Cheaper slavery or so we're told.WTF is all this about?! It's like if your position is outsourcable then you're gone. Don't matter what you know or how hard you've worked, it counts for nothing in the end.I am truly gutted and that's less than 18 months after accepting, yes that's right, accepting a permanent position with this company. ------------->>> BREAKING NEWS!!! <<<------------- Saddam Hussien has weapons of mass destrcution |

Sorry to hear the bad news. I've been outsourced once already. Luckily the company outsourced within the U.S. and moved the outsourced employees to the other company. For those not wanting to move, severance pay was given to help out. Hopefully, your company will provide some sort of severance package. How's the IT market over there? Any prospects look good?Tara |

There's talk of redeployment and some of our colleagues are finding out the redundancy package we will receive. I guess it will be alright for people with over 5 years service but for someone with less than 2 years service, I don't think it will matter much.quote: How's the IT market over there? April... probably the best time to look for a new position. New financial year and companies more willing to spend some cash and hire new blood. I'm already looking and dishing out my CV to friends with various "connections".------------->>> BREAKING NEWS!!! <<<------------- Saddam Hussien has weapons of mass destrcution |

Permanent and temporary are misnomers.I am often at companies longer than the permanent people around me - usually against my will.==========================================Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.DTS can be used in a similar way.Beer is not cold and it isn't fizzy. |

Coincidentally I recently I observed that there were quite a few posters from umh, India.Writing in hardly understandable english, and asking mostly stupid questions.Welcome to modern day slave labor except now we don't import the slaves, we just export the work.Western "civilisation" is self-sacrificing to it's own god of greed.rockmoose |

you need to take it easy :)Although I don't like the outsourcing one bit, you cannot place blame on the people in India (or anywhere else) who are taking these jobs. Think about it. The people taking outsourced jobs are just trying to better themselves by taking a job that has been offered to them. If you are upset over outsourcing, blame the management who makes these decisions. Blame the politicians who make it possible as well. IMHO, utsourcing things like DBAs and developers doesn't make much sense. Language differences are an issue of course, but time differences are also difficult to deal with. managing a team remotely is a difficult task, and could wind up costing more money in the long run. Making management see this side of things is another issue entirely.Anyway, how do you protect yourself and stay outsource proof? You can't - but you can help things a little by doing the following:1. Don't ever stop learning, attend conventions and training as much as possible.2. Help others when you can, because you never know when you will be the one needing the help.3. Keep your eye out for better opportunities. Company loyalty means nothing these days.-ec |

ec,Maybe my remark can be interpreted as a very blunt, categorial and prejudiced statement about people in other countries. Not so, I have the deepest respect for anyone taking an "outsourced" job in order to provide for themselvesand their families, or just to have the opportuninity to learn / do something they like / have a job.I have no problem whatsoever with that. The only motivation for allocating work to "cheap labor cost" countries is money.(Heck, we don't even have to worry about regulated work hours, pension plans etc...)People with education, knowledge and skill are getting sacked for short term interests. The ethics of this can be seriuosly questioned.rockmoose |

Economics 101: Companies only exist to make money. They can only do this by selling stuff for more than they pay you to make it. They must, by their very charter and constitution, take all means necessary to make one extra dollar (all things being equal), if they can. Remember that the next time you:* decide to buy one product over another, based on price* decide to sell one share, and buy another, based on profitability of your portfolioIf you thought they might have some kind of loyalty to their employees, you have misunderstood what the firm is about. If, on the other hand, your complaint is that you disagree with the economics of their current strategy, make a good business case for the alternative.Either way, you've been shafted. Cheers !--I hope that when I die someone will say of me "That guy sure owed me a lot of money" |

Well, I have seen this many times in many forums, whenever people talk about outsourcing, they always talk about India & Indians ...As if like any outsourced job from west comes only to India. I know jobs which goes to other countries other than India. Infact jobs in India also gets outsourced just for the same reason when the jobs are outsourced from west to India. In my opinion outsourcing is all about economics and bottom line of the company.I just hope people stop blaming India and Indian for outsourced jobs. And for the issue of posting stupid questions (No, I didnt took this a personal issue. So my comments below is generic)Some or may be many of my questions be stupid enough for experts but for some one starts to fiddle with sql its a big question...Since an expert feels that a question is stupid its not that the novice should also feel the same way. May be posting without even searching help/bol is stupid...But posting something which we dont understand clearly is not stupid...Afterall I learnt joins here in sqlteam...I have been visiting the forums for close to 3 years now...Many things I have learnt from here...I hope I'll learn more...Karunakaran |

And PS - I agree with what you say about "stupid" questions. No such thing.--I hope that when I die someone will say of me "That guy sure owed me a lot of money" |

In fact, thanks eyechart. I've been wondering how I can "give back" for all the knowladge I have gained from some of the guys here. If anyone in the UK goes through a quiet patch for work, send me your cv. I may be able to sort something out.Elwoos, we must talk cricket some time! Meet up at the next Ashes? Maybe we can meet up with the guys that replaced rrb's guys! |

I'm shocked that google maps can't locate the Garden of Sakuntala :)In all serisousness though, if you could give us a region where you live (or want to live) and the type of work you are looking for (DBA, developer, troublemaker, etc.) we might be able to help out. -ec |

Given that Guinness doesn't travel well......why don't you do the decent thing and go to the best and original source of the product.....Ireland!!!!!And.....we're neither part of the UK nor the 51st state of the USA as some people may believe. |

I know some developers there in Ireland. Economy is slow. Pay rises are scarce. Not the best option. |

Actually I am Part Indian.American Indian that is (1/8 Cree), Christopher Columbus did not know where he was and dubed us Indians. So dont worry about labels karuna we got mis-named by half a world! I do have a little problem with the level of communication skills on some of the out-sourcing. Tech support in my experience suffers greatly if the communication is inadequate. In fact I have refused to continue to do business with several companies that have outsourced Tech Support to companies that do not staff with individuals with adequate lingual skills. Example while I speak and understand some French, German and Spanish I would never attempt to provide support in these as my skills are not good enough. My pride would not allow me to do a half job.JimUsers <> Logic |
