Hmm, far too many to choose from to say what my favourite ones would be. But some of my favourite authors over time have been Iain (m) Banks, Pratchett, R.A. Salvatore and Tom Clancy.

KEN HENDERSON

And his amazing The Guru's Guide To SQL Server series!

Oh wait, that's my job, never mind.

I am with MR Moo --- R.A. Salvatore

Can you say Dark Elf.

Though Elaine cunningham runs a close second.

Michael Moorcock is one fav, I particularily liked the Elric sagas.
Sometimes I can relate to the Dancer's at the end of time on the boredom level.... cool story.

Other than that:
Tolkien, HP.Lovecraft.

It was ages since I read a non-technical book though.
I was about to say "a work of fiction", but nowadays where does one draw the line .

Hmmm... growing up I read a lot of Franklin W. Dixon (Hardy Boys). Later got into Tom Clancy a lot. More recently, the Left Behind series. And for business, nothing beats Dr. John C. Maxwell.

Currently reading: Today Matters and Winning with People (both by Maxwell), and Fritz Onion's Essential ASP.NET with Examples in C#.

SeventhNight, I think we have similar tastes in books. I'm also a huge David Weber fan. Really anyone who writes for Baen I like these days. I also just finished reading Freakonomics. Very interesting book.

I'll have to add David Weber to my 'to read' list... I'll have to work through the Baen author list. I've been re-reading alot of stuff recently, so I'd like some new authors.

Jeffery Archer! His fast paced style of writing always gets me hooked, and I remember finishing "Shall we tell the president" in 6 hours of non-stop reading

I loved The Godfather too, though it took me almost a month to finish, but nearly every page had a few quotes underlined with a pencil. I dont think any other book I've read had so many deep things to say!

hmmmm...AjarnMark, I'm currently reading Essential ASP.NET by Fritz Onion too...only this one has examples in VB.NET. Very well written book, jumps straight to the point, doesnt treat the reader like a fresh college grad

Stranger in a Strange Land, R.A. Heinlein
The Magus, John Fowles
Atlas Shrugged, Ayn Rand (oh, I see someone already mentioned this but it's worth repeating)
Archie & Mehitabel, Don Marquis
Childhood's End, Arthur C Clarke

Plus nearly anything from John Grisham, Clive Cussler, Rex Stout, John D McDonald, Alistair McLean, Michael Palmer, Robert K Tannenburg and many more.

We had a guy on our ship (Vietnam days) who's wife would mail him the latest Travis McGee novel when it came out. He had a waiting list to read the book hung up by his bunk, usually there were 20+ names on the list.

And nobody mentions the "Foundation Trilogy"

Or any of the articles in Penthouse.....

Actually reading Joe Merchant right now...

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0151962960/qid=1117632382/sr=8-2/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl14/102-4422149-8595361?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

Not the best read, but one of only 4 authors to have a number one best seller on both fiction and non fiction in the NY Times...

Suppose to turn it into a movie someday....should take quite a bit of rewrite I imagine...

I liked the FOUNDATION trilogy, also liked some of the DUNE books (especially the first one). Anyone read any Herman Hesse? I used to love his stuff

is this Frank Herbert's Dune? I watched the mini-series

quote:

"You are an apt pupil, none better, but I've warned you that not even in play do you let a man inside your guard with death in his hand."
"I guess I'm not in the modd for it today," Paul said.

"Mood?" Halleck's voice betrayed his outrage even through the shield's filtering. "What has mood to do with it? You fight when the necessity arises - no matter the mood! Mood's a thing for cattle or making love or playing the baliset. It's not for fighting."

"I'm sorry, Gurney."

"You're not sorry enough!"

i read the foundation ... didn't quite appeal to me...
i like tolkien and some of our local writers.
i must recomend Alamut by Vladimir Bartol. it's a slovenian writer and the book was translated
into more than 30 languages.
it's a book written in 1928 about islam fanatics and people manipulation.
great reading.
