I have a theory that Sarcasm is perceived slightly differently in different countries and in particular that in some countries it is almost considered offensive.

Anyone have any thoughts on this (without too many examples aimed at me please )

www.dictionary.com defines it as

quote:
A cutting, often ironic remark intended to wound.
A form of wit that is marked by the use of sarcastic language and is intended to make its victim the butt of contempt or ridicule.

n : witty language used to convey insults or scorn; "he used sarcasm to upset his opponent"; "irony is wasted on the stupid"; "Satire is a sort of glass, wherein beholders do generally discover everybody's face but their own"--Johathan Swift

I think that most people I know (in the UK) use it less agressively than this. What do others think?

If it really meets this definition, "A cutting, often ironic remark intended to wound", it's hard to see how it wouldn't be considered offensive.

In a forum like this we may use it a little more than we would in real life, because the personal consequences of someone getting really upset are much less. They can’t reach over and smack us. On the other hand, we get pointed, brutally honest points of view that we wouldn’t get in real life, and have to deal with some stupid and childish points of view.

There are language and cultural differences that can magnify the offensiveness of a remark, and people here don’t have body language and eye contact to take cues from, so it’s best to be moderate with what you say.

Of course, a lot of people are just assholes in any language, and seem to take pride in it.

Hhhhm
Now sarcasm, i was brought up on it and live with it, all the time. Were I live it is actually part of our culture and is deemed(sp) part of normal life.

Steve i can understand the post as we both come from the same neck of the woods(ish)

If i was to be as sarcastic on here as i am with my mates then I would probably be with Crespo now
And to answer your question i DONT see it as being offensive (used correctly), but i can also see why others would.

Nice Doug!!! I'm never sarcastic. I hate everyone and everything. My coworker loves everyone and everything. We're a great team. It's a love-hate kind of thing.

It's not sarcastic to tell someone they are stupid btw. Giving someone code that "sort of" answers their questions, and will effectively blow up their database if they run it, is sarcasm IF it's something that everyone but them recognizes as an incredibly stupid thing they should never try AND it has something included that prints an encoded message talking about their immense ineptness, idiocy, and stupidity while it's blowing their world to shreds.

Ahh, the power of "language".

AndyB I was born in Chester and lived near there a long time so I agree with you absolutely. In that part of the world it is the norm to be sarcastic to friends at least Lowest form of humour, highest form of with.

I'd be interested to know what the aussies think about this.

Where I come from, not being sarcastic or ironic is considered rude.

Sarcasm is a fine art. It *can* be highly offensive, though personally I would hardly ever use it in such a sense, unless of course I really disliked someone. Though, naturally, the key to good sarcasm is to leave such ambiguity as the reader doesn't really know if it's either true or offensive. ;)

Are we talking about sarcasm or irony?

Or is just not understood.
Try watching the simpsons or monty python with groups from the USA and UK and see when people laugh and how quickly they get the point.

It seems to me that sarcasm is becoming more and more biting these days, and I find I like it less and less. I used to use it quite a bit, but don't care for it so much now. Why flail someone?

In person, one of my favorite responses to sarcasm is to just stand there and look at them with that look of contempt mixed with pity that says, without words, "That was a stupid remark. Aren't you out of elementary school? We normally only hire adults to work here. You should go back to your office and update your resume because at this rate, you're going to need it soon." It works wonders!

I tried that also Ajarn, after having a similar near-death experience to the one you are having now. However....I looked in the mirror one day and realized I was getting wrinkles from all the contemptuous (you're an IDIOT!!!!) looks I was giving 90% of the people I work with.

I was explaining my situation to people in the office though, and found that's a great way to indirectly satisfy my sarcasm addiction, while providing valuable feedback to the herd. You should try it.
