I have data on my laptop which is not classified, but I wouldn't want it to be available to a thief if the laptop was stolen. (If for no other reason than bad press.)Anybody have a recommendation for securing a laptop to prevent data theft if the laptop is stolen?Sam |

don't think you can....win security can be overcome with linux tools (can't remember the name of the tool...)so basicaly i don't think there's much you can do other than encrypt data...Go with the flow & have fun! Else fight the flow |

Desktops offer a solution I've always regarded as scarey - you can purchase an encrypting disk controller - scrambling your entire disk.I thought there might be something similar for laptops...Or a password protected software encryption package that scrambles the file system?Or an obscure Windoes security option on folders?Or 3 invalid logins and the C4 plug inserted next to the disk drive detonates? |

whatever you do i can always take you disk and put it in another computer making it a slave and read all it's data although a gyroscopic trigger with little C3H5(ONO2)3 Nitroglycerin with a fingerprints activator can do wonders ...Go with the flow & have fun! Else fight the flow |

This is the point I'm trying to address. Is it necessary to have an encrypting disk controller, or is there a soft solution that might be a better fit for laptops....A soft solution that encrypted (a portion of) the file system might be adequate - the data isn't encrypted, but it would push the accessability of the data so far out that the ROI would diminish for most theft. Try making that drive a slave and reading the data. Better to reformat the drive and move on. |
