| I was wondering if anyone had any of these books (taken right off the sqlteam store page, I've listed them at the end) and what they thought of them. I am getting the sql server 2000 DTS book as I work alot with it but I'd like a little spare time reading (stuff thats nice to know for the future but I'm not needing to know right now)... I'd honestly like to get all of these eventually, but I really only have money for one (back to me working for bread and water). I read the book review site and they all got decent ratings (I think, I will go over them again before I actually buy).I got 2 of celkos books on the site (puzzles/answers and for smarties) and here are the other 4 I'm looking at. I'm considering the XML and stored procs one the most for now simply because I'm lacking xml and quite a bit of html knowledge. Perhaps someone who actually has these books can give me a bit of a direction? Are either of the sql server 2000 programming or transact-sql for server 2000 anything above and beyond the 2 celko books?Trying to get all the info I can... Anything will help. | Well, obviously I'm gonna suggest that you get The Guru's Guide to SQL Server Stored Procedures, XML, and HTMLBy Ken HendersonSeriously, there's more in his books than 2 or 3 others in the same category combined. I hold Ken's books up to at least the same level as Joe Celko's; Joe himself has even said that he's learned new tricks from Ken. If you really can only get one book, get this one.I highly recommend Rob Vieria's books too, and while I haven't read Kalen Delaney's version I wholeheartedly recommend the Inside SQL Server series, they're excellent.And I don't want to bash anyone, but which reviews of Itzik/Tom's book did you read? Amazon has A LOT of pretty scathing reviews and 1 star ratings, certainly more of them than the ones praising it. Ken and Rob consistently get 5 stars from everybody, and deserve it. |

They're worth twice that much. I wasn't kidding or exaggerating when I said he's got 2 or 3 times the material of any other book in their class. And the only reason you don't believe me now is because you haven't read them yet.  And I don't know what you expect to pay for computer books these days, but $50 is normal. Oh, I definately believe these books are worth every penny... I just can't get that many of them because of how many pennies they cost  And bookpool might be good for you americans.. but they want $18 to send it to canada. so 41.00 american is > 52.00 canadian that amazon wants. Thanks for the link though Michael. I do want to get to the states sometime and make american monies. | Every single one of them is a great book.I lend Rob Vierra's to the ASP guys as it reallys gives a broad view of SQL programming, both Ken's books are essential purchases as is Inside SQL Server 2000 and I've got to say that the Advanced TSQL book is excellent - yeah advanced maybe pushing it and it contains some stuff you're never likely to use but its well written, got lots of examples and some nice tips and tricks. Another book I'd recommend is SQL2000 Unleashed - its got some great tuning stuff - whilst its all pretty much stuff you can get elsewhere - its organised really well and all in one place. The Unleashed series seem to be pretty good - I'm halfway through ASP.NET Unleashed and have C# Unleashed still to go - I'm getting ready for Yukon HTHJasper Smith |
