I've been looking for a good topic to write my first article on... However I've hit a dead end pretty quickly. Any ideas for me?

So far the only one that I've come up with that I have experience with is a script that compares data in 2 identical tables and updates the second table to look like the first. It has some uses, but it's very specialized (unfortunately) and only worth while running if you have large table (1 million rows) that join to larger tables (8 million rows).

Not sure if it's worth writing though... Any suggestions?

Heh, now theres some humour that only a few people will laugh at.

I should do one for the setup we have here... Tables with primary keys of varchar(40) and why not to use them :P

I was just going with... now that I'm an aged yak I should probably write something useful

how about a really good article on collation (I just emailed robvolk about this one) there's quite a few unanswered (or unsatisfactorily answered) posts out there....

Oooooh, an article on collation. Talk about a page turner. Crichton, King, and Koontz eat your hearts out.

just kidding, since I havent written any articles I shouldn't be teasing (but I can't help it).

Rob, I warned you not to get me started on that topic... I became an expert in MV'd databases 12 years ago... And you couldn't pay me enough to go back to them!

Backing Up Terabyte Databases To Floppies and Punchcards

First get yourself a ten thousand floppy jukebox.
Need an interface to automatically swap to next floppy
Floppies aren't very reliable so you will need a mirrored system to get two or more copies of each.
Hmmm - numbering the floppies becaomes a problem.
Needs some temps to swap floppies - or maybe they can come already stored in cartridges.

Nah - think punchcards would be easier - writers already handle streaming. Just don't drop them (and think of the rain forest).

Of course the database would need to be off-line for a few years while it's going on (maybe someone could estimate the time) or the backup will always be writing changed pages.
This shouldn't be a problem as the restore will take a few years too so the company is obviously happy with this.

Maybe I will write an article on it - know any places that want to be test sites?

Strange, I don't remember punchcards being made of exotic hardwood veneers.

You need to read the finished article.

This is a critical backup so needs best quality punch cards.

Why not just take the disc out and put it through the photocopier?

One has to be careful to use a digital photocopier. Better yet, store a copy of the disk offsite by faxing it.

copy it, scan it, save it to disk, email it to your DR site and tell them to restore it.

I believe you can get ClearData inc to come along and verify the procedures for a very reasonable price.

Now you guys are just being really silly. You can't put the disc through the photocopier!!! It only feeds paper - you'll have to lift the lid and do the copy manually.
