Hello,I just finished installing SS 2008 Developer's Edition on my Vista Home Premium laptop. Previously I had the SS 2005 Evaluation edition installed, which expired last weekend. I attempted a re-install, an it failed because it indicated errors relating to not being able to find a file. So this week I bought the 2008 edition.First I uninstalled the evaluation version and all related components and rebooted the machine.I had numerous knowledge base articles on ss 2008 installation printed out that I carefully reviewed, and I concluded I had everything required and understood the process.I proceeded with the installation(selecting all components) following the documentation, it came to the page where you specify the service accounts. This is what I specified, I did not write them down but managed to find the accounts in config manager as well as the Services dialogue:DB Engine: Network ServiceAnalysis Service: Local SystemSQL Browser: Local ServiceSSIS: Network ServcieReporting Services: Network ServiceI am unsure if the above is what the service accounts should be, but after reviewing the documentation, this is what I concluded. I am not a sys admin, thus I made an educated guess based on what the documentation indicated.Towards the end of the installation I received the following error, numerous timesCannot find file specifiedLinkId: 2046Prod Name: MS SQL ServerMessage source: setup.rllMessage ID 50000evt type 0xx6121810A%400x5D9A8C61Prod Version: 10.0.1600.22I clicked retry, and the error came back, so I clicked cancel and the process continued. Note that I believe this is the identical error I received when I attempted a re-install of the SS 2005 evaluation edition. At the end of the installation process, the results indicated that the DB Engine, SQL Replication, Full Text Search, Reporting Services and Integration services all failed to install. I brought up SSMS, and I was able to connect to SSIS and SSAS servers, but not the Database engine.Visual Studio opened okay.I am at a loss... wonder if I should do an OS re-install from the Windows CDs to get a clean system. Did not really have much of anything on it other than SS 2005, some study software materials, that is about it. Just used the SQL Server 2005 software and all the components, perhaps some renmants are still lurking?I can paste the summary log the installation process created...I appreciate any help and/or suggestions...Talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish. |

Anyone here have any ideas. Maybe the service accounts I specified need to be looked at:DB Engine: Network ServiceAnalysis Service: Local SystemSQL Browser: Local ServiceSSIS: Network ServcieReporting Services: Network ServiceI'm leaning on an OS re-install.Talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish. |

The service accounts are fine for a laptop. What is the error in the setup log?Did you try starting the SQL service from the config manager? What error do you get? It's possible that the unistall of the SQL 2005 Evaluation edition was not entirely complete. And is causing this issue. |

Thanks for the reply Yellow. Here is the message right at the top of the log, copy/pasting the error help link does not work(love Microsoft), as noted in my initial post, towards the end of the installation, the installer program displays error messages indicating it could not find a file. SSMS worked and could connect only to SSAS and SSIS(even this SSIS failed). Visual Studio worked. I received these same "could not locate file errors" during a re-install of SS 2005 evaluation edition previously. I am thinking of doing a re-install of the OS.Final result: SQL Server installation failed. To continue, investigate the reason for the failure, correct the problem, uninstall SQL Server, and then rerun SQL Server Setup. Exit code (Decimal): -2068643839 Exit facility code: 1203 Exit error code: 1 Exit message: SQL Server installation failed. To continue, investigate the reason for the failure, correct the problem, uninstall SQL Server, and then rerun SQL Server Setup. Are there any helpful messages in here:C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log\20090912_165658\Detail.txtIf not, a re-install may be the quickest solution. |

Hi Yellow,That file has over 24,000 lines in it.Recall I mentioned when attempting the re-install of the evaluation copy of 2005, I received the same "could not find file" error message...Talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish. |

I posted this question on the MSDN message forum that is patrolled by Microsoft technical staff, and a fellow was reviewing my logs. It took over two weeks. One of the things he said to do was to ensure I have Windows Installer 4.5. I looked high and low and could not find anything that resembled an installation program. How can I determine the version of the installation program on my system. He also asked me to run a clean up utility that could be downloaded form their KB.Seems rather odd to have to go through all this peripheral gyrations to install Microsoft's flag ship product on a Microsoft operating system. Honestly. There is an entire forum dedicated to installation issues with SS 2008 and 10s of 1000s of forum messages with all sorts of issues.Talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish. |
