I am running SQLS Developer Edition under XP SP 3. I want to remove this so that I can install SQLS 2005 but can see from various web articles that it is hard to secure a complete uninstallation.

Some years ago, wanting to install 05 after removing 2000, I had real problems, and I am disconcerted to find that it remains so difficult to remove SQL Server.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? - I don't want to go the usual route of Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel unless this is likely to work.

Thanks.

Chris

There are some good suggestions on the following:

Thanks for the links. I have tested the methods outlined there but, alas, I have not managed to remove SQLS entirely - bits were left that resulted in failure when I tried to load SQLS 2005.

It may well be that I made mistakes but I can't help feeling that Microsoft make it absurdly difficult to achieve a clean, total uninstallation of the program. As things stand, I will reformat the hard drive and then reinstall the OS - and take it from there. This is feasible for me since my installation of Sequel Server is standalone and is a testbed. For people with more complex and critical installations, this would be a really painful option to choose.

Blogs that I have read recently suggest that Microsoft has washed its hands of this issue. I hope not.

what i do is uninstall using the control panel
then reboot
then clean up, removing folders/files that were created during installation

installing a new version or upgrading goes smoothly
