Hi all,Greetings!!!First i want to admit that am very new to sql server administration so expecting some help from you all.Am basically doing a production(application) support(client is Microsoft) but i have to project myself as a Sql server DBA(anyone of the MS tool). so am learning the concepts of SQL server by my own.but still to crack interviews i need some real time scenarios that a DBA will face day-to-day. actually being an application support, i don't have much(not much, nothing) DBA activities so really facing problem in it. even interviewers are not expecting 100% answer but still i have to answer 60-70% of their questions(they are concentrating more on real time scenarios rather than asking the concepts from the books like what is the command you give to take backup and all etc....)My need is real time scenarios that a DBA will face in day to-day life.Even its hard to give/tell the scenarios but still you being an experienced professionals, am sure you will provide me some scenarios and its solutions.IF you have any links please provide me......Because Learning the concepts is easy.. like for eg, configuring the log shipping is easy by following the books on line we can do it, but if any problems comes in it then the real DBA works comes.... and even about Orphaned users(just for an eg)... those informations(scenario based) am not getting on Books available....SO please help me out in this and please provide me if u have any links or any books for it. i have to crack the interviews... and i like to be a SQL server DBAAm just a 3 years of experience in S/W field. And i really appreciate you all who are responding for the users query... even it will really helpful and easy way to learn more.... basically this forum also fully contains scenario based but am expecting in interview point of view.....Awaiting your responses!!!!Regards,Richards |

Um, you're asking us to help you get a job you're not qualified for and won't be able to do? Or an I misreading this? Some good advice on getting a junior DBA job - http://www.brentozar.com/becoming-a-dba/how-to-get-a-junior-dba-job/Don't lie or exaggerate your skills. If you don't have the experience, you don't have the experience. p.s. Bumping your post after just 30 min is totally unnecessary. This is a forum, not a chat room. Be patient.--Gail ShawSQL Server MVP |

Yup, and if you have 'basic concepts' and no experience, that's the job you should be looking for.quote: And i didn't post here without the knowledge of SQL server, am having the basic concepts in it.
Great. So when an interviewer asks, tell him that you have basic concepts and no experience. If you try to fake it, answer questions from memorisation not experience it will show.--Gail ShawSQL Server MVP |

If you have medium rhetorical skills and experience at some level it is amazing how much you can talk your self in to. Unless you're applying for a job at a seriously technology focused company the chance of you being interviewed by a person that actually knows what you need to know is fairly slim. HOWEVER; that does not justify anyone from applying for and potentially getting a job they're not qualified for. If you happen to land a junior DBA job the only real advice I can give you is to pay attention and know where the backups are. You can pretty much talk yourself out of anything except the missing backups. Those will get you fired in a heartbeat.- LumbagoMy blog (yes, I have a blog now! just not that much content yet) -> www.thefirstsql.com |

Great. So read and follow the advice Brent gave in his blog post. It's intended for someone in exactly your position - wanting to start out in the DBA field with no experience.quote: And just a question... can you please give me some details on Orphaned users and how to fix it.

@richieasir I've been doing the Junior admin bit with no experience or mentor\senior admin for a year now. All I can say is sort yourself out with a small virtual environment at home. And setup everything you can from mirroring to users, databases, data-collection, backups, etc go into as much detail as possible. Then Break it. Fix it and break it again. Then in your interviews tell your interviewer what you have done.Coz if you try tell them about something you actually haven't done they will find you out and that's the end of your interview. And another thing read, forums, blogs and white papers and implement them or try recreate these issues in your virtual environment. |
