Upgrading from SQL Server 7 to SQL Server 2008 requires an interim upgrade to SQL 2000 or SQL 2005. My client's old server is running SQL 7 and their new box has SQL 2008. How can I do this upgrade without having to buy either SQL 2000 or 2005?

The database is at least 9 gb, and therefore cannot be attached to MSDE 2000 or SQL 2005 Express.

You can use the Developer Edition for 2000 or 2005, they're only $49 I think. A trial version might work too. If you have an MSDN license you can download 2005 for this purpose.

You can use the evaluation edition of SQL 2005. You're not going to need it for the 180 days.
