BoI IT would be the equivalent of my own employer (also in the financial services sector in Ireland)There was a merger planned last year between the IT sections of BoI and AIB - basically to operate as a shared services centre. This fell through for EU "(lack of) competition" regulations. BoI then continued to look for somebody to take over their IT operation - so that they could revert to their core activities (now where have I heard that phrase before) - financial services. This is the result of same.Regarding the IT Union....that's nothing special....this is an inhouse IT operation, staffed by BoI Bankers who happen to have highly developed IT skills. All banks in Ireland have union representation - some area's more represented than others....but the move does potentially mean that the side benefits of working in a bank (staff loans, generous holidays, sick leave, profit sharing (not many banks over here report losses!!!), etc) MAY be diminished under a new employer.....therefore the 'unhappy' employees exercising their 'freedom of association and representation' rights. From the outside Ireland may be seen as "Cheap outsourcing"...that is not how internally we seem to be promoting ourselves - the official line is that this country offers high-value skills at a reasonable rate. How long we can offer either the skills or the rate is the $64,000 question. |
