| I often wondered what it would be like to be a developer in another speaking language. Man it must be tough with so much documentation and efforts in English. Maybe it's nice because there isn't so much junk. Sometimes I'm sad that I can't enjoy other parts of the web that aren't in English in non work related stuff.Can't imagine MSDN and SQLTEAM in another language. What are they like? So 100 years from now is everybody just going to assimilate to English knowingly or not knowingly, what would be the alternative,will there always be fragmentation.Kind of like if you move somewhere and become conversant, at what point do you dream in a non-native language.JULES What country you from!BRETT (petrified) What?JULES "What" ain't no country I know! Just kidding, keep it coming, love your mumbling...On a serious note, this forum really has been getting a lot of publicity on the web, now we see people from many countries. | One of my first jobs out of college was with Andersen Consulting (now accenture). My first trip to their central training facility in sunny St. Charles was pretty entertaining. They had people from all over the world. It was funny to hear people speaking in a different language but hearing "English" computer terms thrown into the conversation. You could almost follow along if it was a really technical conversation.===============================================Creating tomorrow's legacy systems today.One crisis at a time. |

I'm off on holiday now, see you in 2 weeks".Must admit I was surprised he was so transparent.Same project they gave us a VB/sql server expert. He was a contractor who had never met anyone from the company and wrote a VB app to repeatedly run a timer to schedule an app to run once a week.Have met some good people from Andersens but a lot that weren't==========================================Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.DTS can be used in a similar way.Beer is not cold and it isn't fizzy. |

I see what you are getting at, but you took both of those particular way out of context. My one was having a go at Jay about a hastily typed comment that didn't make much sense. Jeff's request for English was in response to somebody pasting pages of TSQL code and asking for it to be fixed. What Jeff was getting at was asking the poster to explain what his business rules are. Jeff's use of the word "English" wasn't to say that the poster had a poor command of the language, he was just asking for words instead of code.But I do know what you mean, I had to debug some code written in Brazil. All the object names were English, and all the variable names were in Portugese. It looked really weird  . So yes, if you are writing code in another language, most of the API calls are in English.Damian |

| The two threads I mentioned had context for me only I guess because I'm reading along thinking, What if English was my second language?The hastily typed one, in that case would have been a stumbling block in the thread instead of breezing over it and recognizing it at a mistype. Then the funny ensuing bits would have been a stretch for a second language reader, as in "I don't get it". This kind of stuff is all over the place, it's definitely not bad stuff just stuff that when in the place of not knowing English well would throw you.Then the other one, really brought it to a point for me. There are masters of interpreting the original requirements from code here. But at some point sometimes a good restating or rethink of them is needed or helpful to those trying to help, again following that as if English were a second language, I imagine kind of difficult.I'm not anti English at all, guess I just drifted of into a nightmare of not knowing it. Paranoia followed. |
