Hi geezers!I am in a jubilant mood at the moment!  I don't know if you guys remember, but a while back I posted a message about my contract not being extended again etc Well, how things change! I have been offered a permanent position with the same company and I am really looking forward to this adventure!I started contracting less than 6 months following my University graduation. OK, so I had plenty of fun travelling Europe [earning silly money for work that was a 100 times easier than my final year project at Uni]. But it was tiring, unsettling and it cost me a loving relationship  Anyway... this is going to be my first proper permanent position and I am kinda looking forward to it.  You're prolly not interested in this, but hell I don't care! I am happy, very happy! Have a great weekend all!________________Make love not war! |

| Congratulations !!!! very exciting !!! i also was a temp for my current job and remember how happy I was to be a "regular" employee and to have benefits and job security and all that.way to go! enjoy the weekend!- Jeff |

| I was a contract employee for 6 months and was hired on after my contract expired. With the recent uncertain economic times it is comforting to have a "home" and it is a testament to your abilities.Congratulations !! |

| That's great...glad for you...Why does the saying..."be careful what you wish for" come to mind...Good luck though....Employees and consultants have different thought patterns though...Office politics suck....Definetly GREAT to have that steady paycheck....(well as steady as this market allows)GOOD LUCK!Brett8-) |

I came back to the UK in November 2001. Terrible times for me back then [ouch! it hurts remembering those days]. I went 3 months without work until I found a contract in Epsom. Initially it was a 3 month contract but they kept extending and extending and extending. At one stage I was told that it was over [was a few months ago when I posted a message here whinging about how shit life is  ]. Anyway, they extended it again until they finally decided that I know too much so perhaps I’m more useful as a permanent associate [what a word! LOL]As you guys said, stability is the key word here. It has been my dream over the last 6 years to have some sort of a permanent base. Ever since leaving home at age 18 in 1997 I've been on the move, one year Uni accommodation then renting with friends, back at Uni, renting with friends, never ending! 21st century nomad!The only downside to working in this part of the UK is the prices of property. The cheapest flats go for nothing less than 130k. As for buying a proper home, you can forget it.My role in the company will remain the same for the next year I guess. I have a big project starting in January then another big one starting soon after and that would probably take another year. Who knows what I’ll be doing after that, but project management is my agenda.________________Make love not war! |

| Yeah, I might be looking to purchase a home next year and for a 2 bedroom, 2 bath, I'm looking at $300,000 just for a townhouse. More like $400,000 if I want to get something nice. Buying a house is even worse. You need about 450k just to get something decent (neighborhood and size).Tara |

| Whenever I'm at a company the permies always seem to be fairly short term.Maybe it's a conicidence.£130k would be quite a small flat.I've a 2 bed one for rent in Sutton if you're interested :).==========================================Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.DTS can be used in a similar way.Beer is not cold and it isn't fizzy. |

| Completely agree with you Ajarn...I hated being permanent. In all my years in IT I have been a "full timer" for exactly 3 months. Worst..three..months..ever.. In Australia, the "job for life" dream has gone. I can still remember just after the dot bomb when 7 out of 13 full timers where laid off within 2 weeks of the stock price going seriously south. They where given exactly one hours notice. As I was the only contractor at the time, I simply said "Go on break the contract and pay me out!" They didn't... Oh you're totally right on this one. In fact, they made 3 people redundant the day they asked me to join as permanent staff. I think it depends on the work you're doing. I thin I could safely say that my job here is guaranteed for the next 2 years [there is so much work to do, it's daunting just thinking about it!].I wish I did work in the US though [people know how to live life over there]. I was checking out our Ads section and the flats/homes people advertise in our US branches are superb! Some of the homes sound lovely and quite a reasonable price too.________________Make love not war! |

Heh, CDs are expensive yes. Imports are even more expensive. I bought George Wassouf’s latest album and it cost £15 [ worth every single penny though]. ________________Make love not war! |
