| I saw that on the news last night. Even though the shark was relatively small, it would have made me super scared. I am terrified of sharks. I still go body boarding occassionally in San Diego, but I'm always on the look out for them. It doesn't help that the water is usually pretty murky.Tara |

| I've got a couple of good stories about sharks in Australia..A mate of mine moved from Perth to Port Headland (about 2500km north of Perth) and arrived there about midday. He likes to fish, so he goes to the spit to throw in a line. He is up to knees in crystal clear water and after a decent bite on the line, he pulls his line back in and starts to head back up the beach for more bait. He gets about 2 steps out of the water and hears this thrashing sound behind him. He turns around and there is this huge (about 9 foot he reckons) shark that had just beached itself trying to attack him. The shark then keeps thrashing about trying to get back in the water and when it has turned around he grabs it by the tail!!! He said it was just too heavy to pull up the beach so he lets go..... It's out there waiting...Oh and Tara, in Oz we call body boards "shark biscuits"!DavidM"SQL-3 is an abomination.." |

I believe the statistics are that you are far more likely to get killed by hippopotami than bitten by a shark. Actually most sharks are harmless and if you go diving in the barrier reef you can swim along side them.(I've never tried to pat them though....) In fact, I was watching a documentary about sharks last week, and it claimed that the big sharks normally attack out of curiosity - which is why they seldom kill (ie completely eat) surfers. It's normally a case of ...hey that seal looks odd...hmmm...tastes odd too...ughhhh --I hope that when I die someone will say of me "That guy sure owed me a lot of money" |

| I've watched a lot of documentaries about sharks (especially those on Discovery channel during shark week), but it doesn't make me any less terrified. I'm also a bit afraid of airplanes. I'll still swim in the ocean and fly in planes, but the fright is still there.Tara |

| Here is the other one...LOCATION: Cactus Beach, South Australia, on the edge of the Nullabor (means "no trees" in aboriginal) ...TIME: Start of SpringCactus beach is Australia's (IMHO) best surf beach.. 7 breaks in the space of about a 1Km. There is always waves. There is one problem though.. Sharks! and lots of them. The Great Australian Bight is a breading ground for seals and spring is calving time. The sharks just love this...You must never surf at dusk or dawn and it is strongly advised not to wear a black wet suit or have black or dark markings on the bottom of your board. (from below you look just like a seal) Tara, I bet the underside of your body board is black or darkly colured, right?Anyway, the nearest fresh water and food store are about 30Km from the beach, so you usually have to catch dinner. Fortunately, Cactus has awesome fishing spots and every afternoon people are waiting for the salmon to run around the point. It is as easy as throwing in a lure and that's dinner. One particular day, a guy catches a small white pointer (about 4 foot). The cliff is too high to reel it up so, he starts the long walk back to the beach all the while trying not to tangle the line and keep the shark on the hook. He gets to the beach and has about 5 meters to go when one of his mates, volunteers to wade in and help (there is a bit of coral reef that juts up out of fairly deep water). This guys is standing on the reef up to his knees, when a huge cry lets loose.. "SHARK"! About 20 meters from this guy a huge fin surfaces and its going flat out towards him. People are yelling at him to stand still, move, jump, sit, lie down, pray.. anything.. it was straight out of Jaws. The guy is just frozen and just when you think he is dead meat, the shark is about 2 metres from him, it opens its mouth and starts biting the "little" shark (About 3 bites if I remember rightly) and the "little" shark is no more. There is plenty of blood in the water and the guy freaks out and finally runs back to the beach. A couple of minutes later a pack of about 20 sharks arrive on the scene..Nobody went back into the water for 2 days...it's hard to resist a 6 foot barrel!DavidM"SQL-3 is an abomination.." |

It's white, but that doesn't make me any less scared.A few months ago, a woman was killed by a great white shark just north of San Diego. She was wearing a black wet suit and was swimming with the seals. The friend yelled out to the nearby lifeguards, but by the time they got there, it was too late. | Good choice of colour! About 3 years ago, a guy was cut in half by a great white at Cactus and then 2 weeks later another guy was eaten a bit further east.. They reckon it was the same shark...DavidM"SQL-3 is an abomination.." |

| Everybody sing along.... "Show me the way to go home..." We have a timeshare in Aruba and the first year we were down there we asked about sharks and sitings and the locals said that the government purposely feeds the sharks on the other side of the island (uninhabited side) to keep them over their. Needless to say, I get alot of use out of the pools down their. |
