HI I was wondering what skill level is needed to do an upgrade, I am new to SQL Server. I just want to know what would be involved. I did this type of thing on my previous system.

Are there a list of steps that you can follow?

Start by downloading SQL 2008 upgrade advisor, then go from there...Difficulty varies from person to person

Seems like we would have to upgrade the version of sql running for our entire Great Plains app. Another solution is to have a copy that is restored each day with the most recent data – that copy could run 2008 as a standalone. This would allow the Report Services developers not have to bang their heads against the wall over something that may have been enhanced in 2008.

For now, what sort of time investment to upgrade to sql server 2008 would you say is involved?

It's not possible to answer your question without knowing the details. It depends on a lot of factors, moreover you didn't say which version you are planning to upgrade from.
