I installed this suite at home for some valuable practice & tests when appropriate, about a year ago. On Sunday I got a message that the evaluation period has expired, and the next point of call was microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy

I'm surprised - I thought the point of Express was that it's a cut-down version to use, with no restrictions! I was so horrified that I went all through complete removal and re-installation. The only problem is this time restriction on Management Studio. Can't use 2005 version on my 2008 databases. The tables are still there and I can still access them with apps such as Crystal Reports, but I need SSMS, really.

Well, I'm not going to purchase the Standard Edition... Any way to get rid of that evaluation rubbish? Is it in the registry somewhere?

Yes

I have Express. I have SSMS. Had it for a year. After the year passed, SSMS will not open and gives the message that the validation period has expired, but there was no such period, as it was and always has been free.

Even completely removing all the software and reinstalling leaves this lock in place.

I was wondering if anyone had a similar problem. This is not an issue for us SQL people - for Microsoft licensing.

Since getting Express 2008 about a year ago I gave it no thought, as is the way with software, it was SSMSE. Never purchased a normal / standard one. Unless I got a stolen /cracked one somewhere. If it was stolen it wouldn't have a evaluation period, would it?

When doing contract work, I have to sneak SSMS 2005 onto my PC somehow, or ask the admin people, who just have no idea what it is... They never have 2008 at companies I've been to so far - usually 2000 - it's a blessing to be as far as 2005! This is why I got 2008 to play with

SSMS for 2005 will do anything I need in my workplace, and is easy to get hold of.

It makes sense to need version 2008 of SSMS to use with databases set up with 2008 - all well and good - used for a year or so at home. But to have that unsightly reminder message that I can't use it any more, even though it is FREE is monstrous

What I could do with is to get Express '08 and all the tools on there now. They are on there, available, right now, but SSMS cannot be launched. Horrible.
