OK something gives you admin accesss to a SQL server 2005 and are told to fix all performance problems on the server or recommend solutions to fix it.

All you are told is there are performance issues. How will you handle this? Where will you start? What counters you will first start looking at? What are the possible reasons for any performance issues?

I'd start with SQL Profiler, PerfMon (see sql-server-performance.com for which counters to look at), and querying the DMVs for the missing and unused indexes. I'd also look at fragmentation and statistics.
