Please verify...

I need to create a new instance to run on my local machine.

DO I NEED to use the DVD to do that? No software installation reqd. Can I start a new server instance by using SSMS? The SQLSERVER service is running and I can connect to anything. What does it take to make a new one?

You have to run the installation a second time and then choose a named instance.
The first installation / instance has the name of your local machine for example "MyNotebook".
The second instance for example "test" is then reachable for connection via "MyNotebook\test".

No, you're never too old to Yak'n'Roll if you're too young to die.
