Hi,

I'm trying to upgrade SQL Server 2008 express x64 to the standard edition on Windows 7. I've been running the express version without any problems, and expected to be able to upgrade the edition as suggested in the list of upgrade paths.

However, when selecting the existing instance as the installation type, the Features selection shows all options as greyed out and unavailable. I've tried installing with the relevant switches from the command prompt and still no luck. I was expecting to be able to install Integration services, Analysis services etc from here. In fact, I cannot proceed at all because it reports a validation error as none of the options have been selected.

So I tried to install a new instance, and whilst the Database engine services and SQL server replication options are available, I still do not get presented with the extra features that Standard provides over Express.

Can anyone please advise? I'm thinking of uninstalling the Express version first to see if this works, but am reluctant as yet as all the documentation I can find suggests an upgrade is possible.

You can't use Standard Edition on Windows 7. You'll need to instead use Developer Edition. Standard and Enterprise Edition require a server operating system such as Win2k3 or Win2k8.

Thanks for quick answer.

This link suggests you can install on x64 Windows 7 but not the Home Premium version which is what I have so the outcome is pretty much the same.

Interesting, they must've changed the requirement in SQL2k8 (I'm more familiar with SQL2k5). Looks like it's still the case for Enterprise Edition though.

Sorry! I don't have the answer then.
