I have an option to SQL Server Admin Training, but don't know which one would be better for me. We have SQL Server 2005 databases and will eventually move to 2008, so should I take the 2008 training now and use that to perform DBA functions on the 2005 databases? Are the DBA functions in SQL Server applicable across versions (2000, 2005, 2008)?Mark |

between 2005 and 2008, yes, very similar. 2008 just has some new cool things that 2005 doesn't but the things you would do day to day are very much the same. 2000 to 2005 was a big jump up in how things were done so I would say those two don't translate so well. keep in mind certs expire so your 2005 cert would expire much sooner than your 2008 cert. I did them all last year (dba/dev) for 2008 and the translation down to 2005 isn't very much of a switch.Mike"oh, that monkey is going to pay" |

I am only going to one 5-day class called "Maintaining a Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Database" so that I can be the DBA for our 2005 databases. Do you have to attend other classes to get certification or just take the test? I find that certification are useless because they only show that you can study for the test.Mark |

You don't really have to take any classes to pass the tests so your point is valid. What I was getting at was that the 2008 knowledge will take you further than the 2005 knowledge because 2008 should (in theory) be relavent longer and most of what you learn for 2008 translates backwards to 2005 fairly easily.Mike"oh, that monkey is going to pay" |
