Hi, I am new to sql 2008 and I get this error when I try to restore the backup which was also done in the same version:

Restore failed for Server... (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smoextended)

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The database was backed up on a server running version 10.00.1600. That version is incompatible with this server, which is running vesion 10.00.1442. Either restore the database on a server that supports the backup, or use a backup that is compatible with the server. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)

That's not the same version. The minor version is different and, if I recall correctly, 1442 was one of the CTP/release candidate versions, so prior to RTM.

What's the result of SELECT @@version on both?

Hi gail,

You're right, it isnt the same version. Does SQL have settings to adjust the compatibility of the backup or what do you suggest I do? I am trying to download the SQL server 2008 R2 evaluation version, will try if it works, is this ok?

It's not the compatibility of the backup, it's the physical structure. Do you not have a full version of SQL 2008 there?

The 2008 eval version should work, the 2008 R2 eval will work, though be aware once you've upgraded the DB to SQL 2008 R2, you won't be able to restore or attach it to SQL 2008

" That version is incompatible with this server, which is running vesion 10.00.1442."

Doesn't that suggest that the "current machine" is running Beta? In which case wouldn't if have expired by now?

Either way surely you would want to upgrade it to RTM or better still latest ServicePack, or am I missing something?

It should have expired long ago...

Yeah, that's what I thought. Thanks Gail. Not sure how the O/P is managing to try to restore onto a machine with that version number then - I wonder if its actually got SNAFU'd somewhere along the line with various Release Candidates etc.

Tricks with system clocks maybe. Set machine's clock back to mid 2008, install one of the CTPs (or RC), will work for a few months. The RCs also had built-in expiry dates.
