I have production databases used daily but both the database files and the log files have dates on disk that are over 10 days old. They are set for full recovery. Are they all just living in memory? All databases and logs are backed up once a day only.

It seems to me that if the server was to go down, recovery would not be to actual point in time.

Ignore the dates on the files. If any writes are happening to the database, then the files are being written to with the checkpoint process. The file date will not reflect that.

I think file date/time is the later of last shutdown of SQL Server (or possibly latest startup of SQL Server) or expansion of the files (and maybe some other things like Shrink)

Definitely not a safe indicator of the files being in use

I've always assumed that updating the file timestamp every time the file was (physically) written to was just way too much overhead, and disk-head-travel ... but that's just a hunch.
