Can you tell me how to get out of the overwrite cursor mode on SSMS? This is not about creating cursors... it's either a keyboard or editor mode which seems to get activated accidentally, looking like a flashing square which deletes following characters while typing, which I don't want, and can't see a purpose for.

The reason is probably because I'm using an Apple Mac keyboard on VMware to run Windows.

Is there a way I can get out of overwrite mode using any of the options in SSMS at all? There is no insert key on the keyboard. The problem doesn't arise in this html editor I'm using now. I can't find a way to get back to insert mode in SSMS; the flashing vertical bar which I can use to fwd delete or backspace or insert characters as the following text moves forward.

In SSMS right lower corner (statusbar): double click the statusmessage to change between overwrite and insert.

hi mike.

You may find the onscreen keyboard quite useful also for similar situations. Just go to start -> run (or the command line / textbox on windows 7 / vista) and type osk.exe

It's pretty ugly but it can be Very Handy!

webfred! How did you work that one out? Best answer I ever saw on this forum!

I was just not ready for that level of granularity. I suppose we moved past minicomputers and greenscenes, and got used to the WIMP environment. I like it. Losing one's control over a cursor is horrifying!
