Hi,
I am planning for migrating sql server 2000 to sql server 2008.
Can any one main steps, what to do , what not to do? and any suggestions.

search for SQL 2008 Upgrade Technical Reference guide. pretty much everything you need to know for an upgrade is covered in the doc.
