We are running SQL 2000 and only have up to 12 users connected at one time. The front end was written in Clarion. The system is very slow most of the time. Everything from going to screen to screen and especially reporting. I am already running the maintenance plan to rebuild indexes, and the log file is being shrunk on a regular basis. Any other suggestions on how to improve our performance??

Stop shrinking database or log would be a good start. That hinders performance, doesn't help it.

Our log file had grown to 10 times the size of the database. Its not a good idea to keep that trimmed back??

It's better to back the log up regularly to keep it from growing to that size. How often are you backing it up?

We backup the database nightly, but it looks like it doesn't back up the transaction log.

Full backups do not truncate the transaction log. Please read through this: http://www.sqlservercentral.com/articles/64582/

As well as managing your log backups - investigate your queries , are they running efficiently? Are you getting any queries that are very slow ?Check the query plans.
Has the system always been slow or is it a recent change?
