I have recently upgraded from 05 to 08 and have been restoring and re-indexing my databases. To my surprise, I have found that it often takes longer for indexing scripts to run than it did before - despite the fact that the computer I am using has been upgraded and is considerably more powerful than previously.

I have been digging around in web resources (esp Microsoft articles) but am struggling to find rational explanations for this. It occurs to me that SQL Server 2008 might be using a higher sampling rate to build its initial histograms than was the case with SQL Server 2005. Can anyone give me some information about this?

Thanks.

Chris
