When he received the reports of how SS and Gestapo murder squads hadfollowed the Army into Poland to wreak massacres, his stomach turned. Sodid his loyalty. The murder squads were killing Catholic priests and Polisharistocracy in appalling numbers. Canaris traveled to Ilnau to confront Hitlerin his private train. General Wilhelm Keitel, Hitler's chief of staff, stopped theAbwehr chief before he could see the Fuhrer. The normally mild-manneredCanaris was in a rage, almost shouting at Keitel: "I have information thatmass executions are being planned in Poland and that members of the Polishnobility and that Catholic Bishops and priests have been singled out forextermination. I fell obliged to give you a word of warning. For such outragesthe world will eventually blame the Wehrmacht, if only because it acquiescedin these unheard-of atrocities." Keitel held up a hand to silence him. "If I wereyou, Herr Canaris, I would not get mixed up in this business! This 'thing' hasbeen decided upon by the Fuhrer himself." |
