Greetings my SQLTeam cohorts !

Just thought I'd drop in after being rousted from a 3-month slumber. First, let me say my CONGRATULATIONS to Jay who wallopped me in my absence. Cheers! It's good to know that the SQL community has been in good hands (of course that also includes Merkin, RobVolk, Graz, and many others here). Congrats also to Chadmat, Sarah and all the other ladder-climbers of late. (Chad good to see you back, too. Thought you had disappeared for a while.)

Next I'm happy to see that I missed the latest diatribes by certain folks who shall remain unnamed, but you know what I mean. (And if you "got" my first reference above, then you truly are an old-timer around here. But let's not rehash that.)

For those who care, I have been doing like Valter (banging out other types of code to make a living without a lot of time for SQL). I'm still doing that, but just had to make a cameo appearance for all my adoring fans .

That's enough for now... Ciao!

You guessed it Jeff! And no Justin, I would never sell my soul like that. While I may have to venture into the valley of the shadow of death on occasion, I am not-so-secretly suggesting that SQL Server would help the CTO in her quest to save money. And best of all, she's considering it.

Some day Rob Volk will encounter Larry Ellison (founder of Oracle), they will battle fiercly, discussing the pros and cons of Oracle and SQL Server, Rob will somehow lose a hand, and then the following exchange will occur:

Larry: "Come with me, to the dark side. Join the Oracle Empire!"

Rob: "Never!"

Larry: "Search your heart, Rob. You know it is your destiny!"

Rob: "I will never join you."

Larry: "You wonder where SQL Server came from ... Bill Gates never told you."

Rob: "He told me he wrote it himself."

Larry: "No, Rob. SQL Server came from a small company called Sybase ... it wasn't even written by Microsoft rebellion."

Rob: "Noooo!"

Larry: "Join me, Rob. It is your DESTINY!"

then Rob jumps down some big exhaust shoot ...

(sorry, slow day at work....)
(this is not intended to be commentary about oracle vs. sql server, just being silly)

My division is probably going to start using Oracle in the very near future. Other divisions are already using it, but my division has been using SQL Server. The reason for the change is that some of our customers have requested a non-MS implementation of our product. So we are going to start working towards that. I have worked very little with Oracle so far, but from what I can tell, it is a bit complex.

Welcome back Mark,

I was gone for a while, I am making a little time to drop in every now and then.

Why would anyone use Oracle?

Tara -
EDIT: Now that I've read more of your posts, it appears you are well-versed on the DBA side of the house. I didn't realize that when I first wrote this post. And now, back to the original.../EDIT

If you're DBA, then I'd expect a huge difference. If you're developer, I'd expect minor irritations as you get used to 1) Doing your JOINs in the WHERE clause; 2) Every SELECT statement has a FROM table, even if you're just selecting a constant like today's date, in which case you use the fake table "DUAL"; and 3) Slight syntax differences like using || for concatenation and TO_CHAR, TO_DATE, etc., etc. instead of CAST or CONVERT.

Well, then again as I think about it, when you dive into building stored procedures in PL/SQL, life really gets funny. And the Oracle developers I've run into seem to do most everything as a CURSOR in their sprocs. Maybe they were just inexperienced, or maybe that's the Oracle way, I don't have enough experience there myself to say.

Chad, is this your new gig? I thought I saw a post somewhere that said you were no longer with MS. Or did I just imagine that?

(And not to be critical or feisty, but ummm.... why is that web site written PHP? That seems contrary.)

Chad

That software is pretty cool. But if you want to release it as free software, and don't have a full version available, having a nagware dialog on every operation is pretty annoying

Some of us have no choice. Some of us need to use P-SQL to access Oracle Data Warehouses and then use T-SQL in our home grown SQL Server DBs.

It's not as bad as you would imagine!

Well, I checked my head for horns (none), and my butt for a pointed tail (nope), and I'm not holding a trident, so I feel very confident in saying

LARRY ELLISON IS NOT MY FATHER!!!

Even with his money, I can't believe anyone would actually want to admit such a relationship.

HEY MARK!!! GLAD YOU'RE BACK!!!

No, I am still with MS. This is my free time I'm not sure where the rumor came from that I left MS.

As for the website, I was writing one in ASP.Net, but I spent a lot of time putting the site together (And not as much doing productive work on my product), So, I decided to go with a easy site builder (I know, websites for dummies) (Through IWon.com). It has ecommerce built into it so if/when I ever actually want to sell something, It will save me from having to write that stuff. It also has message forums etc.. that were easy to add. I did the whole site in like 1 weekend.

Thanks.

This version is free Damian. Hopefully, the next version will have enough new features to entice people to pay for it, but just in case, there is always the removal of the nag that might be worth a few $$$s .

What I am trying to get out of releasing it as freeware is help with QA, and more than just myself coming up with things to add to it to make it a more useful and worthwhile product.

What I found kinda funny was I had written the majority of my app, then I just happen to see the ad for LockwoodTech on this site. I didn't even know that company/product existed. I swear I wasn't stealing his idea
