I'm reading "Eats, Shoots and Leaves", must be the first humorous book about punctuation ever written. Unfortunately, it's British humor (no offense Nigel), but if you get yourself in the right frame of mind, not bad at all.

Here's an example:

quote:
One of the most profound things ever said about punctuation came in an old style guide of the Oxford University Press in New York. "If you take hyphens seriously, " it said, "you will surely go mad." And it's true. ... Churchill said hyphens were "a blemish, to be avoided whenever possible". Yet there will always be a problem about getting rid of the hyphen: if it's not extra-marital sex (with a hyphen), it is perhaps extra marital sex, which is quite a different bunch of coconuts.

True RickD, must say the the Aussies are pretty good as well, but they're known to take it a little bit too far... some take it the wrong way if they're not use to it.

Dunno - they don't seem to see the funny side of being given a dvd of the rugby world cup (nor do New Zealanders, they don't appreciate the "Swiss" skipper of the Americas Cup winner either).

Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.
DTS can be used in a similar way.

Sam, if you like vocab tricks, you might want to pick up a book named Ella Minnow Pea. It's a silly little story that as the book progresses, it periodically drops a letter from the alphabet and that letter doesn't appear again in the rest of the book (you'll have to read it to understand why, but it's all part of the story). It just struck me as quite a challenge for someone to write with an ever-shrinking list of valid letters.
