Hey owners, mods, and everyone else.

Had some questions...I noticed some of you SQLers are consultants. My question is how do you get your name out. I am just wondering, I did not see websites for many of you. I have been doing a lot of web development throughout my years and was wondering if anyone is interested in some work to sell themselves . I know the forum prohibits from trying to sell products so don't want to get nailed for that, that's why I called on the owners. Can I advertise my business on SQL Team? If so what are the costs associated with it ? My previous personal business was just my name and I have now registered my real business (effective friday) so I want to help bring life to web pages for you consultants out there (if you are interested).

Thanks

Jon

Most of my work has been through networking and knocking on doors. My current contract is different. The client found my blog through a google search. I would assume my google rank is helped by SQLTeam. My articles link to my profile, my blog is linked there.

As you guessed, nobody wants the forum to be blatantly about selling peoples services, although putting your url as your post sig is fine.

If you want to advertise directly on the site, email graz@sqlteam.com and discuss rates with him. Or you could advertise with Google and your ads may appear here anyway.

Hope that helps

Similar to Damian, most of my work has been from referrals and networking as much as I can. Get involved in groups like a local SQL Users Group or other SIGs. Also, when I need work I scan the ads looking for ones that sound like they're open to contractors. There are several staff augmentation/consulting companies here, too, and some of those will work with you as a sub-contractor.

And I suppose putting "HIRE ME ! Available for contract SQL Server, ASP and .NET type work."
in your bio like Damian - http://www.sqlteam.com/forums/pop_profile.asp?mode=display&id=177

must help a bit too.

Duane.

I put it there ages ago, it didn't do anything for me.

As I said, the only way I think it helped me is the google rank of my site.

Well, i've been contracting for about 10 years or so in one language or another, seem to have been in a job for most of that time one way or another... Here in the UK, it is easier to use recruitment agents to get contracts... The thing there is that they also seem to send along so many people to an interview who really are clueless about the technology they're supposed to be experts in, but they will work for less than anyone else... This has given contractors a bad name here, but once you get past the bulls**t, it gets easier...

www.jobserve.com is the site I use to see what is out there...

Rick, given the state of the UK IT market, do you think it's advisable to remain in permanent employment for the time being?!

Although I enjoyed the challenges and uncertainty of contracting, I find myself a little bit restless after only 5 months in my new permanent position.

What do you advise?

I'm still contracting, but spent a few months out of work at the beginning of the year, which was a bit of a bugger... Seems to have picked up a hell of a lot now though and am just starting to look around for my next position as I only have 6 weeks left of my current contract...

In some ways it would be easier to go permanent, but pay-wise, it's just so much better contracting and if you look hard enough and have the right experience, it's so much nicer not having a boss...

I was so much looking forward to the stability of having a permanent job but like I said, I feel like I'm ready to move on, lol.

could do with the extra dosh too. It seems the older you get the more you spend.

I've gone the other way, the older I get, the less I spend... But then I have cut back a bit in the last 5 years or so, such as got rid of a wife and a house...

The only problem with taking a permy and then dumping it is that it doesn't look good on your CV...
