What does an MIS manager do? In particular how might it differ from an IT manager/DBA/developer etc.

What (if any) differences might there be if (s)he worked in a Further Education college? (16-18)?

This is part of my research for a job I'm interested in. I think I have most of the answers but would be interested to know what people here think

thanks

To me an MIS Manager and IT Manager titles are nearly interchangeable, although some would argue that IT is more hardware oriented and IS is more software oriented. MIS/IT Managers typically oversee DBAs and developers and have lots of paperwork to do and meetings to attend.

Yeah, that's what I do all day now. I don't know what my title is though. It has several curse words in it.

don't forget reading and responding to tons of emails

Seriously, i think manager's work is more political rather than technical and knows how to "delegate" work

Jen I'm a master of delegating :) but to be honest it's the 50% pay rise that appeals most

So my next question - to follow on from this is. Why is an MIS different from any other Information System? What would one do that the other wouldn't?

here in the philippines, when they say MIS group, it's the software development group, they're responsible for creating and maintaining company computer systems

Well, if they're really being explicit, you could argue that IS is just general Information Systems that perhaps allow the business to operate, and MIS are Management Information Systems that allow the upper management to monitor the business such as productivity levels, job costing, accounting systems, etc. But a lot of companies keep all the geeks together in one department.

This particular one is in a college so it will be looking at funding levels, student intake and all that sort of thing. It's not clear from the website if IT and IS are seen as the same thing though I would suspect they are.

hmm.. tempting...

but no, i think i got that covered last year, same time people got a little bit confused about Kristen's gender

I'm 90% female and the remaining 10% maleness is when i bully netadmins to follow SOPs, usually the 90% works like a charm

10% male brings up some scary images - especially after some of the discussions on hermaphroditism recently
