What happens in some individuals brain that they refuse to alter their course even when shown a better way.

IE: Your way is better but I will just keep doing it this longer and harder way.

I first ran into this when I was young, I worked with another guy on a printing press. When we had one type of problem he would always try the same solution even though it never worked. After about an hour he would stomp away disgusted and I would get in and solve the problem in about 10 minutes. When he returned he would ask how I did it and I would show him, His response was always the same.

Don't do that.... it won’t work!!!!!!

It was all I could do to keep from punching him.

This happend about once a month for over a year.

I have since run into this same mental condition to one extent or another in users over an over again.

Is it an epidemic?
Can it be cured without Euthanizing the infected idividuals?

it a psychological block to changes. it's pleasurable to a person to do it in a familiar way because something new can be frightening. thus they fear it.

I would say from the threads on this site that it's widespread.

Sound familiar?
Q: Please help me fix this query!
A: That won't do what you want, but here is something much simpler that will work.
Q: I just want to fix my query!
A: Well, it won't work, but this other way will.
Q: I like my query better, except is doesn't work. Help me fix it!
