What IT Skills shortage?

Did all the people that flocked to IT go back to their "real" jobs?

I'll vouch for an IT Skills shortage... SC

It is relatively difficult to find someone with/without experience that actually has development skill. We had applicants failing a 5 question basic logic test...

Many of our applicants fail the urine test even though they studied.

LOL
I'm looking for a new job at the moment, and I'm certainly not noticing any "skills shortage" in London. There seems to be an awful lot of front-end stuff with a bit of SQL, but very few SQL Server specialist jobs.

When I did my job search a few months ago I got kicked to the curb because I lack .NET skills. I did fine with the SQL testing part, but when they start throwing the .NET questions I looked like a kid fresh out of tech school.

That is such shame too because that VB.NET is such a pile of crap and that is what a lot of them are asking for. Total downgrade from VB 6. I told myself I would break down and learn C# this year. It is on the laptop. Still have'nt opened it.

Please backup all of your databases including master, msdb and model on a regular basis. I am tired of telling people they are screwed. The job you save may be your own.

I have been avoiding .NET as well... I've actually gone so far as to install it, and uninstall it twice...

I took two .NET courses and walked away really impressed with it. I am anxious to start working with it, but at my work we have one in house software application that took 4 years to develop. It has over 200 forms, 200 classes and 40 modules and it is hooked to 2 other projects. All these are VB6. I want to learn .NET but with the size of our current app, it will take years to rewrite it in .NET. I just don't have that kind of time. Our IT staff went from 11 to 5, and only 2 of the 5 are programmers. The rest are network admins and helpdesk support.

Oh, You definitely need to stay away from the wizzies
You can compile from the commandline using csc.exe, maybe more Your style Corey ?
I really like the .NET programming platform, and have a personal preference for the c-family languages.
There is also some hope of getting to use functional in .NET http://research.microsoft.com/projects/ilx/fsharp.aspx

i think .net is cool...
i hate doing front end stuff... contols and like...
middle and back layer stuff is my game.

i started my programming career in 1999 with VC++ 6.
man that was a cool language. i liked it immediatly.
did some project in VB and i hate it from the bottom up...
C# rules in my book.
i don't know why are people afraid of wizard. they can be preety helpfull.
corey next time open c#

"i hate doing front end stuff... contols and like..."

So when you change a column in your SQL table from, say, 10 to 12 characters all your ASP.NET code will automatically change, the forms will offer a wider field, the field validation will change so it now limits at 12 characters, instead of 10 will it?

(I dunno the answer, I'm just asking, but if it doesn't then its not much better than what went before! IMHO)

Having made the transition from VB6 and ASP/VBScript to C#/ASP.NET in the last 6 months (with a smattering of Java/Struts a while back) let me say that I really, really like .NET. It's quite a mind-bender to change your way of thinking from VB6 to .NET in any language, but once you get it, I think you'll like it too. I used to be so vehemently opposed to anyone putting down VB in any form, and most of the time it's still a stupid remark that's made, but now that I've been working in C#, I definitely can see the appeal of C syntax. I used to think that it would be easier to go from VB6 to VB.NET rather than learn new syntax for C, but there are enough new things to learn, that it might just be easier to change everything at once.

The approach I took was to install VS.NET and run through the Walkthrough demo applications to get a feel for .NET and then come up with a real application you'd like to have and start building it. For me there's nothing like real development to force me to learn new things. But be aware that the Walkthroughs lean heavily on Web Services which is fine for an introduction to those also, but Web Services are not necessarily the most efficient way to build your applications. Direct database access is still a good thing.
