Hello All,

This is a tough one.

We have a portal that has multiple users running now on MS SQL server. However like other portals, like www.hi5.com we would like to implement a "tell a friend" web page sender.

Now i noticed that most of these portals, woudl ask thier users to enter their yahooID and passwords, and a script read through thier yahoo mail and send mails to everyone in their phone book

anyone has any ideas on how this is done ?

I'll mention "web scraping" and let you research that yourself.

Be advised that providing this kind of tool will

a) possibly piss off Yahoo! quite a bit, to the extent they may block your site's traffic
b) maybe even violate their terms of service, which could cause your user's Yahoo! accounts to be closed
c) open your site up to be zombied or hijacked by hackers
d) be very easy for someone to use incorrectly, and cause them and their friends all kinds of aggravation. Think "spam", because that's essentially what you're describing

If someone wants to give you a list of their email contacts, Yahoo email has an export feature where users can export their address books entries into files.

Thanks robvolk, Jeff
I am doing a google search.

I also got in touch a few professional organizations on the web.

a few sites implement such a facility such as hi5.com and tickle. And Yahoo never "blacklisted" them.

I would also look into the yahoo feature which exports their address books, but most users i noticed are not really computer savvy.

I would surprise you that many people still dont know how to sign up on a site :-(

If they have a license agreement or partnership with Yahoo!, then that makes sense. I'm only suggesting you be careful.
